The European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) has voted to soften the EU’s supply chain law, limiting its scope to only the largest corporations.
Under the revised proposal, the directive will apply to companies with over 5,000 employees and an annual turnover above €1.5 billion, instead of the previous threshold of 1,000 employees and €450 million.
The change reflects concerns from EU member states and businesses that strict due diligence rules could harm competitiveness. However, NGOs like Misereor warn the move “dismantles” the law - reducing the number of affected firms in Germany from 2,700 to around 120.
The Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD), adopted in 2024, was designed to make major companies responsible for human rights and environmental practices within their global supply chains.
