Logistics Fact of the Week: Why Can a Container Ship Leave Port With Empty Slots?

It seems simple: if a vessel has available space, fill it. In container shipping, however, maximum capacity does not always mean optimal loading.

Planning a container ship is a huge three-dimensional puzzle involving weight, stability, draught, cargo destinations and the vessel's entire port rotation.

⚖️ Weight and stability matter. Containers cannot be positioned randomly. Poor weight distribution can affect vessel stability and structural stresses. This is also why IMO's SOLAS rules require a Verified Gross Mass (VGM) before a packed container can be loaded.

🌊 Draught creates another limit. A vessel has strict loading and draught restrictions, meaning that having physically empty slots does not necessarily mean additional heavy containers can safely be accepted.

⚓️ The next ports matter too. A container destined for an early stop cannot simply be buried beneath cargo that will remain onboard. Stowage planners consider future ports to minimise unnecessary container reshuffling.

📅 Schedules matter. Liner vessels operate within complex networks of scheduled port calls. Waiting to maximise the load can create delays further along the route.

So a container ship leaving port with visible capacity is not necessarily operating inefficiently. Sometimes leaving space unused is the most efficient and safest decision.
