What is an EORI number?
An EORI number is a unique code used to identify businesses and individuals when dealing with customs authorities in the EU, the UK, and for movements between Great Britain and other regions. Without it, you cannot submit customs declarations or obtain an export license.
Who needs an EORI number?
You need an EORI number if your business:
moves goods between Great Britain (England, Scotland, Wales), the Isle of Man, and any other country (including the EU); moves goods between Great Britain and Northern Ireland; moves goods between Great Britain and the Channel Islands; imports or exports goods from Northern Ireland to non-EU countries.
It’s also required if you apply for an export license.
Why does it matter?
Without the correct EORI number, your shipments can face significant delays at customs, additional storage costs, and potential fines. In some cases, goods may even be temporarily seized until the documentation is corrected.
For example, if you ship from Great Britain, you need an EORI number starting with GB. If your business operates in Northern Ireland, you might also need one starting with XI.
How do you get it?
You can apply online through the customs authority of the relevant country. Note that your business usually needs to be “established” in the country you’re importing to or exporting from. If not, you’ll need to appoint a representative to handle customs formalities on your behalf.
Do individuals need it?
No, as long as the goods are not controlled and are for personal use only.
