The Port of Rotterdam, the largest seaport in Europe, is no longer just a network of docks and cranes. At its western edge lies Maasvlakte II - one of the most advanced port areas in the world, often described as a true “city of robots.”
The terminals at Maasvlakte II are designed to operate almost fully autonomously. Ship-to-shore cranes are remotely controlled, while Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) move containers across the terminal without drivers. All operations are coordinated through a central digital control system.
Human involvement is limited to supervision from control rooms, sometimes located kilometers away from the quayside. This level of automation allows terminals to operate 24/7, significantly improves safety, reduces operational errors, and accelerates vessel turnaround times.
Maasvlakte II has become a benchmark for what the future of port logistics looks like - efficient, data-driven, and highly automated.
