Logistics Fact of the Week: The Largest Container Ships Are Longer Than the Eiffel Tower Is Tall

Modern container ships are so large that their length exceeds the height of the Eiffel Tower.

Today's Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCVs) measure almost 400 metres in length, while the Eiffel Tower stands 330 metres tall, including its antenna.

If placed vertically, one of these ships would rise higher than one of the world's most famous landmarks.

🌍 What can they carry?

The largest container ships can transport more than 24,000 TEU (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units).

Their cargo may include:

- vehicles and automotive parts;
- electronics;
- furniture;
- clothing;
- food products;
- industrial machinery;
- thousands of other consumer and industrial goods.

⚓️ Why does it matter?

Larger vessels reduce transportation costs per container and improve the efficiency of global trade.

However, only specially equipped deep-water ports with modern container terminals and powerful cranes can accommodate them.

🧠 Interesting fact

Despite their enormous size, these ships are typically operated by a crew of only 20–30 people, thanks to advanced automation and navigation systems.
