The UK has reached another major milestone in rebuilding its rail infrastructure: the electrification and upgrade of the Church Fenton to York section have been completed on time and on budget, as part of the £11 billion Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).
This strategic investment will deliver:
Shorter travel times - Manchester to Leeds will drop from 50 to 42 minutes, while York to Manchester journeys will be 10 minutes faster;
Up to 6 fast services per hour, improving frequency and connectivity;
A modern signalling system and bridge upgrades to enhance reliability and allow more trains to run;
Station redevelopments improving accessibility and passenger experience.
The economic impact is significant: over 5,000 jobs created, 6,500 new homes supported, new commercial spaces unlocked, and regeneration of urban areas such as York Central and Ravensthorpe.
Importantly, 85% of the workforce lives within 40 miles of the route, ensuring the investment benefits local communities and businesses.
With both ends of the route now electrified - from Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge and from Church Fenton to York - TransPennine Express trains will run greener, cutting 108,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually while improving service reliability.
